All versions include bugfixes, which may or may not listed. To minimize overhead, we sometimes release on one or a few platforms only for a given release number. Our attention to platforms depends on the feedback we get from such users. Since this an ongoing project, new features and bug fixes will subsequently appear in later versions, and therefore eventually on all platforms. Our current emphasis is on Mac OS X, Linux/x86 and Solaris. Other platforms are only released occasionally. If you want to see your platform better supported, drop us an email telling us so, or register and buy a license. ---------------------------------------------- Interrogator 1.5.0.3 - There was a bug that caused file copies, especially slow ones, to crash. Fixed. A handful of other copy-related bugs were also fixed. - Program startup and general operation was made faster. - New Dir windows will start always sorting and hiding as set in Preferences > View, rather than sometimes inheriting from the previous dir window. ---------------------------------------------- Interrogator 1.5.0.2 - When renaming or creating a new directory, often the file or directory would appear to revert to its old name (newDir or newDir2 for a new directory) for a few seconds before correcting itself again. Fixed. - When drag-copying a file onto another volume, sometimes it would say that it was about to move, when it was really about to copy. Also, sometimes it would say it was about to hardlink when it was really about to symlink. Fixed. - a bug was fixed where if your home directory had a symlink pointing to it, it would complain, and sometimes quit, soon upon startup. - A bug was fixed that caused the program to hang up in a distinctive sort of way on some machines. Although the program would seem to work, tallying would never get done and lots of windows would display a message saying that they were not tallied, and these would not go away as they should. - The X11 versions wrongly described themselves in the about box as "beta" versions. 1.5.0.0 was in fact a full release. Fixed. - (mac only) sometimes, when clicking in the Volume Window scroll bar, you could trigger one of the triangles by mistake to expose or collapse. Fixed. - (mac only) sometimes, cut copy and paste didn't work while renaming files. fixed. ---------------------------------------------- Interrogator 1.5 - Find command now has a full dialog with lots of features. You can search by name pattern, dates, owner, etc. You can combine criteria. You can have multiple searches going on at the same time. - New Permissions command and dialog to change file permission and ownership in the Unix tradition. Also, it manages: * ACLs on Linux and Solaris, * chattr on Linux, * chflags on Mac. - New preferences for View menu defaults such as sort mode, Hidden modes. - (Mac) You can now drag pictures from Safari, MacSFTP, and other web browsers and programs into Interrogator directories. Before, it was not possible to drag&drop a file from somewhere other than in the filesystem itself. - Classic icon setting, Coloring mode, font size setting, and balloon tips modes are now remembered from one run to the next. - New Diff commands allow more flexibility. - small speed improvements, performance improvements, and, as usual, lots and lots of bug fixes. ---------------------------------------------- Interrogator 1.2 - Classic icon setting, Coloring mode, font size setting, and balloon tips modes are now remembered from one run to the next. - 'Hide Unappointed' was removed as a feature. Nobody was using it and the complexity was getting inconvenient. - Sometimes, if you canceled (or closed) a dialog from a script command (eg in the SuperUser or Secure Login command), the underlying process would not be killed and instead would hang around waiting for input indefinitely (but harmlessly). - Sometimes, copying a directory that had symlinks in it would cause a crash. ---------------------------------------------- Interrogator 1.1.0.3 - Windows would occasionally dart to the left edge of the screen as they were automatically reshaping themselves. Fixed. - a new command "BBEdit new file" was added to the Edit > Edit File With menu. MacOS Only. - The Inspector on MacOS now correctly displays the full range of Unicode characters - previously they just disappeared. These characters include accented letters, Greek, Cyrillic, and special symbols - anything that wasn't in 7 bit ascii. - A new item on the Mac Help menu was added for Tech Support. More tech support info added to About box. - Documentation had minor updates. - Some Full Disclosure displays were badly formatted; fixed. - Double running is now less mysterious - if you start the program a second time it will activate the first instance before quitting itself. - Many seemingly spontaneous crashes were fixed. ---------------------------------------------- Interrogator 1.1.0.1 Default font for Mac is now Verdana (was Helvetica). Bugs Fixed: - when a new volume was mounted, the Volumes submenu on the menu bar would have all the items shifted over by one. Mac only. - Copy file Data (Edit menu) would only copy the data up to a null (zero) byte. Paste to New File would only write the file up to the first null byte. Now all binary contents are accomodated. Note that other programs may not work properly with binary data in the clipboard as text. ---------------------------------------------- Interrogator 1.0.1.6 - mac: you can now copy and paste in a dialog as normal; keystrokes cmd X, cmd C and cmd V work, also cmd A for select all. This includes static text boxes, eg the message on an error message box. ---------------------------------------------- Interrogator 1.0.1.2 - Changed the way files being copied are depicted: the bargraph quality was made more distinct. ---------------------------------------------- Interrogator 1.0.1.0 - Shift click now works as expected in a DirWin. - Significant speed optimzations have been done - The X11 versions have been brought up to date - Delete command was a bit too free, it would allow you to delete without anything selected, whereupon it would delete the whole directory. This has been disallowed; you must now have something selected or the command will fail. - Rename had a bug where if you simply changed the case in a name, for instance, 'Evoke' to 'evoke', it would incorrectly think that the new name would collide with an existing file, and dialog you for what to do. Fixed. - Some speed enhancements were done. ---------------------------------------------- Interrogator 0.9.8.3 - Full Disclosure is now available through cmd I or ^I in addition to the keystroke from before (^F^I or altF altI). Also more changes: New Directory = shift cmd N go to Computer = shift cmd C go to Home = shift cmd H Help = cmd H For X11, change cmd to ctrl - Volumes submenu was added to Open menu. It lists all the volumes, as with Panther's finder sidebar, for easy opening. - New commands to mount net volumes, and to unmount volumes, were added, see Open > Volumes. - Script implementation was changed. Scripts in the directories openMenus, editMenus, viewMenus and helpMenus now show up on the end of those four menus. - Typing preflags, and commands, now echos in the lower right corner of the frontmost window, as a confirmation. - Copying files now displays the progress as a partial icon for the destination that slowly grows to a full icon, in addition to the progress bar in the inspector. ---------------------------------------------- Interrogator 0.9.7.7 - Help menu has more help items - including Quick Tour ---------------------------------------------- Interrogator 0.9.7.5 Cross-Platform changes: - The Path menu items (top of contextual menu) have been reversed so that the first item refers to the current directory instead of the last. Mac Only Changes: - New icon coloring mode: "Classic" will use the same icons the Finder uses (give or take). This is the default mode. See view menu if it's a problem. - Icons can now be larger sizes, up to the full 128x128, limited only by your font size. This is better for high-res screens. - You can now drag directories and files into the Dock icon for Interrogator, and Interrrogator will open them as you would expect. Same for the file icon in the Finder and in Interrogator itself. - The checkmarks in the menu bar WORK finally. - Hide Invisible mode works. ---------------------------------------------- Interrogator 0.9.4.3 - Lots of cleanup for the Mac version. The file icon now works. Includes online documentation. - The Open and Close submenus of the View menu, have split out on their own and now appear before the Edit menu. Quit is still on the Close menu. - Often when the program would start up, it would take a long time for the bottom of the contextual menu, with all of the scripts, to finish loading. Or it would take a long time after startup for the Host window to fill in its information - same bug. Fixed. - Default is now coloring by Age, rather than by Permissions. The commands are all the same; it just starts up differently. - Several bugs were fixed in font handling. ---------------------------------------------- Interrogator 0.9.4.1 Mac: - keystrokes listed in menus were all wrong. In particular, Cmd and Opt were interchanged, and Select All was somehow displayed as ^E. Fixed. ---------------------------------------------- Interrogator 0.9.4.0 All customer-reported bugs are fixed. - Trash is gone. It was confusing - there was one .tint_trash directory per directory, and there were commands to clean them out but they were directory-specific, which is new to people and unexpected. I didn't even use it. And I got feedback that many people just delete files directly - or move them into a directory if they fear they may want to keep them. Me too. So now there is two commands: Delete - deletes after a dialog warns you Delete Force - no dialog - All keystrokes that used the modifiers ^ and alt have been changed to use ^ shift and alt. In other words, rename mode is shift^alt R. The old keystrokes will continue to work for a few versions; the tutorials have not yet been changed. - Tab works even if you haven't typed in anything to select. Try it. - A bug was fixed where, if you copied a big tree of directories, sometimes (randomly) certain subdirectories weren't copied along. - RightSize sometimes did some crazy things. Fixed. Mac Only: - window height/vertical position problem fixed. - Delete key now does Backspace like it should. ---------------------------------------------- Interrogator 0.9.0.1 - ColorBlind preferences (in the file ~/.tint/prefs) have a new option: you colorblind people can now specify all 14 colors explicitly in hexadecimal. The default is ffcc00 ffff00 00ff00 00ff99 00ffff 0000ff 0000ff ff0088 ff00ff 9900ff 0000ff ff8800 77dd00 ff0000 although you must put them all on one line. Each is a six digit hex number, as with HTML but without the # character. So, for instance, ff7f00 is Orange. The first seven numbers are age colors, the next six are permission colors, and the last is the error color. They are the same colors as shown in the color key (altI or ^I), except the Permission colors are sortof in reverse order. - De-archiving .Z files never worked properly; now they work. - Tallying has been brought under control more. - That blasted bug where the Host window would draw text collisions upon startup, has finally been fixed. - The inspector window comes up more consistently when it should. - Now you can use both alt^T and Delete for Trash. ---------------------------------------------- Interrogator 0.9.0.0 Features/Changes: - The Trash commands used to use alt^T, now they use the Delete key (not the backspace key) instead. To trash a file: Delete To delete a file immediately: altD Delete etc - You can now use the keystroke ^/ to bring up the root directory, regardless of what is selected. bugs fixed: - using a menu command on a file whose name includes certain punctuation (like space) would fumble because the name(s) were not quoted. Fixed. well, not entirely not Openers.!! ---------------------------------------------- Interrogator 0.8.2.6 - Permissions color scheme for your owned files has changed slightly. - The Permissions submenu has new items 'set' and 'clear' to change SUID, SGID and sticky bits on files. As usual, you must be the owner. - Setting permisssions had lots of bugs. Fixed. - Background colors of white or black get tinted with a color if it's a remote session (your DISPLAY host is not the same as the host you're running on). - Aborting a program that you run by clicking the Abort button (inspector window, next to the green progress bar) should now work reliably, although it may take a few seconds. - Mounting and unmounting volumes used to confuse Interrogator, which you could see in the Host winodw. Fixed. - Dragging and dropping files now reminds you which kind of operation you are attempting: either move, copy or symlink. - Dragging and dropping a bunch of files used to give you a ghost that depicted all of the files, no matter how many of them there were. If there were a lot of files, this would be slow or even prohibitive. Now, if you drag 16 or more files, an abbreviated ghost is depicted. ---------------------------------------------- Interrogator 0.8.2.5 - lots of changes, too numerous to mention ---------------------------------------------- Interrogator 0.6.1.6 - Mac drag&drop (move, copy, link) fixed up and the modifiers all work the way they should (copy=Opt, link=CmdOpt, move=none) - move-drag (without modifiers) onto a different volume used to be prohibited. Now it is converted to a Copy. (no deletion of the source is done.) - drag a file onto an executable now runs the executable with the file as an argument. - Full Disclosure of a special file, on Solaris only, now yields lots more information. ---------------------------------------------- Interrogator 0.6.1.5 - Much more robust in situations where NFS volumes hang up. - Subdirectories are now allowed in the three script directories. These result in submenus. - A few keystrokes were rearranged: prefs file, go to Parent dir. ---------------------------------------------- Interrogator 0.6.1.2 - moved Path menu to be the first main menu. ---------------------------------------------- Interrogator 0.6.1.1 all versions: - touch targeting is much cleaner - a bug that caused error dialogs complaining about scripts, has been fixed. - better icons for serial and block devices - open is now the Return keystroke edit is now a slash you can open a selected directory either way, open tends to run programs rather than edit them. - drag&drop copying has been cleaned up - color scheme for Permissions rearranged; colors improved. Permissions coloring changed back to the default. mac version : - windows automatically resize to fit. See if it's obnoxious. - title bars now have folder icons you can drag and drop around - window placement has been made better - has distinct icons for mac apps and packages, and rules for opening have been made more appropriate - hidden files now also include "invisible" files ---------------------------------------------- Interrogator 0.6.0.7 - Added commands "Looser Columns" and "Tighter Columns" on View menu. Affects files windows only. ---------------------------------------------- Interrogator 0.6.0.4 - dragging to copy, move or link now WORKS on macos x - dragging to copy, move or link has changed in the way that the image you drag around has gotten cleaner. - Many copy/move/link bugs were fixed, especially with the keystrokes ^altP, ^shiftaltC, ^shiftaltM, ^shiftaltL - The Keystroke reference in the Help menu now works, and also generates a file representation. ---------------------------------------------- Interrogator 0.6.0.3 - New sorting option: Alpha-Numeric. Will sort eg 9 before 10. - Now icons are colored according to the aggregate times and permissions. EG any file under a directory modified will make it red. ---------------------------------------------- Interrogator 0.6.0.2 - ColorBlind preferences in prefs file ---------------------------------------------- Interrogator 0.5.6.0 - fixed a bunch of linkline bugs - Info Mode is changed - only selected things are shown, not upon mouseover as it used to be. It was out of control. ---------------------------------------------- Interrogator 0.5.5.8 - THe SuperUser command now prompts you for a password. cool. - In addition to "rightsize" there's also "petitesize" that makes the window more compact. Use commands ^0 and ^1. ---------------------------------------------- Interrogator 0.5.5.7 - the About Machine item in Help was filled in with all sorts of juicy and irrelevant details about your host. ---------------------------------------------- Interrogator 0.5.5.6 - permission colors: I interchanged green and blue, and the colors themselves changed a bit. Permission coloring looked too much like date coloring. - new command line option -k to display key window - new command line option -V to print version and exit (as standard) New Features: - keystrokes have been rearranged. There is some resemblance with the old keystrokes. As usual, see the ctx menus. - A new panel on the key window shows how far it's gone doing whatever. It's really inaccurate but whatever. Not quite right in some ways... you'll see. - Interrogator now tracks if there's another Interrogator process running that would duplicate its function (same user, host and display), to make sure there's no duplicate processes running. From the command line, you can open additional interrogator windows using the normal options. EG "tint -v" will open a volumes window in the currently running program. The open request is forwarded to the currently active gui process. The one you started exits. cool. - Windows menu actualy -gasp - has windows on it and you can choose them to bring them to the front. Much more rearrangement to come. - Windows resize themselves if left in exact "rightsize" size. sortof. Misfeature Improvements: - info mode should be less hyperactive; the text might stick around long enough for you to read it now, including resizing the key window. Hmmm.. maybe not. You might want to hold the mouse over a point for a while. - If a window is about to repaint itself, it'll display a gray square in the corner briefly to warn you. See if it's helpful. Bugs Fixed: - initial window placement should be better for those windows that used to just plop in the middle of the screen. - files windows: when they came up, and when you RightSize'd, often it would just be the wrong size, there would be a scroll bar. Dumb. Fixed. ---------------------------------------------- Interrogator 0.5.5.5 - new MacOS X version! But it's pretty broken still: - does not pass Apple HI guidelines. cough. - the menu bar is totally messed up. The only thing that's useful is the Quit command, and that's the only way to quit it, even if you delete all the windows. - No dragging actions like copy or move work - You should avoid any commands that have side effects like "create directory" or "duplicate". - the balloon tip message welcomes Martin, that's Martin Bayol, pete's new baby. No real information other than that. - the contextual menus were totally rearranged. See if you like it. I'm about ready to take a chainsaw to it again. - Finally implemented Brian's window placement scheme. If you open a Directories window (try ^D or double click on a Volumes window entry with the thermometer), it'll show up on the far left. Opening windows from there, get placed further and further to the right. At some point this breaks but it c ontinues to try to avoid existing windows. - the info mode gives you a choice: either a) pathologically hyperactive full info in the Key window b) balloon tips (but see above for mac version) c) nothing. whew. peace. See the view menu. ---------------------------------------------- Interrogator 0.5.5.4 - Directories and Volumes windows have additional stuff drawn that's supposed to help you visualize the hierarchy better. - The alphabetic modifiers when you click and drag are gone. To move a file, just click and drag. To copy a file, click and ctrl-drag. To make a symlink, click and Alt-drag or Ctrl-Alt-drag. For others, see the menus. - you can now "type" into a files win or dirs win and select files. This is called "touch targeting". Still not sure how it should work yet, but try this. Type any letter and all files that start with it are selected. Type a second letter and all files that start with those two are selected. In the corner it says what your search string is. You can have more than one - just hit Return or Tab to start another one. Hit tab or return twice to clear the search criterion. Please gimme an idea about how it should really work; kindof sucks now. - There is now a FreeBSD x86 version. Might also work on the other BSD's. - info mode is now a mode. Type ^I to toggle it on or off. - rename mode is also a mode. Type ^R to turn it on. - Size convention for icons has changed. Now they won't ever be microscopic. The only ones that'll be big are the biggest ones in the window. Should be at least. ---------------------------------------------- Interrogator 0.5.5.1 - fixed some bugs with tallying (like if it just crashes right in front of you without doing anything). - arrow keys now work in edit text boxes. Some emacs keys already worked. I can do more. - Solaris Intel Architecture lives! It took forever to get the damn thing up but it's up and porting Interrogator took like five minutes. - Did some cleanup on the volumes window. Now shows your volumes in blues and greens. Other fixes. - Two preferences were changed to make them more apparent to beta testers. Right now by default it'll start closing windows iff there's too many open. IT starts with the deepest first. YOu can change them any way you want in the "hide" menu. ---------------------------------------------- Interrogator 0.5.5.0 - Added a preferences file ~/.tint/prefs, where all preferences are accessible. Right now there's just a handful. The file has comments; just open it with a text editor. - Preferences for font and sizes, in the prefs file. - Sometimes when you'd click and drag to select files in a files window, it would skip some files. Fixed. - Many bugs in the background tallying. One of the most common was "stash stats" critical failure, that would just come up out of nowhere while the program was sitting there. Fixed. ---------------------------------------------- Interrogator 0.5.4.9 New Features - RightSize menu command will enlarge a window to the largest useful size. I wanted to make the Maximize button do that, but its predefined functionality is hard to override. - scripts: on the bottom of each contextual menu are many commands that are defined by shell scripts in your ~/.tint directory. They're pretty simple. Some docs will come later. .gscr = general .fscr = operate on files .dscr = operate on directories .vscr = operate on volumes - new window placement - You might not like it but this is actually difficult under X windows. The window manager has the most control, and each has its own rules (and most of them have preferences to change the rules in different ways). Apparently a program cannot be assured of where its window will be automatically placed until it appears. Because the default placement is sometimes OK, the algorithm may or may not try to move the window after placement, to a location unoccupied by an existing Interrogator window. Often the new location is right next to an existing window. If it must overlap an existing window, it will gravitate toward overlapping those who have fallen farther behind. And, sometimes, it just screws up. Sorry. - Tallying is now done in a background thread. This has been the major reason for the gap since the last release - the change took a lot of kicking and screaming. Sorry I still don't have a good way to turn it off. Directories windows, especially the one for the root volume, will cause the most disk noise.
